Women's Hockey Wins First Game in New Home

BRIDGEPORT, CT - Senior Michelle Panella scored what would turn out to be the game winning goal at 15:40 of the second period, while senior goalie Stephanie Boulay made 17 saves to lead the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team to a 5-1 win over the University of Rhode Island. It was the first game for the Pioneers in their new home at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport.

After a scoreless first period, junior Rachel Mroz got the Pioneers on the board midway through the second. Panella's goal gave SHU a 2-0 lead at the end of the second period.

Sophomore Whitney Dziama made it 3-0 at 1:48 of the third period, and junior defenseman Devon Gaslin gave the Pioneers a 4-0 lead with a power play goal at 4:01.

Lindsay Maturi had the lone URI goal when she spoiled the shutout, beating Boulay at 10:15 of the third period. Freshman Sandy Parlato closed the scoring with her tally at 16:42.

The Pioneers outshot the Rams 48-18.
