Final Stats
FAIRFIELD, CT (March 2, 2006) - Davidson College's Eloise Grose scored six goals and assisted on another to lead the Wildcats to a 17-8 win over Sacred Heart on Thursday afternoon in Fairfield. The Wildcats overcame the snowy conditions to improve to 2-0 while the Pioneers fall to 0-3.
The Pioneers were right there for the first seven and a half minutes of play, answering three Davidson scores, two off the stick of freshman Elizabeth Ottey (Baltimore, MD). The Wildcats, however, began to pull away at the 10 minute mark as a four goal run gave them a lead they would never relinquish.
Four different Davidson players scored on the run before SHU's Heather Gureckis (Nashua, NH) scored with just over 12 minutes left in the half to get SHU back on the board trailing 7-4. Grose answered at 20:36 and then again at 27:31 after another Gureckis goal. Ottey tallied her third of the half with 1:44 left and SHU trailed 10-6 at the break.
Davidson took control from the opening minutes of the second half and put the game away. The Wildcats won the first seven draws of the half and scored on each. Emily Palmer started what was an eight-goal jaunt with a pair of scores. Emily Diefendorf and Anna Mitchell followed and then Grose put the finishing touches on her six goal day with a pair. Kiften Stephens closed out Davidson's scoring at the 17 minute mark of the second half and gave the Wildcats a 17-6 lead.
SHU's Gureckis scored twice more before the final horn to produce the final score, 17-8. The sophomore finished with four goals to Ottey's three. Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) added a goal and an assist while goalkeeper Candice Celebre (Lake Grove, NY) made 12 saves in the loss.
In addition to Grose's seven points, Stephens added four scores and an assist. Leslie Smith made 11 saves to earn the win.
The Pioneers are back in action on Monday, March 6th when they face Holy Cross in West Palm Beach, FL.
