Bridgeport, CT - Sophomore Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) scored two goals and junior Katelin McLaughlin (Hingham, MA) added a goal and assist as Sacred Heart scored three power play goals to beat Wesleyan, 4-2, in women's ice hockey action Tuesday night at the Wonderland of Ice.
The Pioneers jumped on top first when sophomore Allie Gillman (Montreal, QC) scored a power play goal 6:52 into the game. McLaughlin picked up a loose puck behind the net and fed a centering pass to Gillman who one-timed the puck past Cardinal goaltender Rachel Stemerman to put SHU on the board.
The Cardinals tied the game midway through the first with a power play goal of their own. Sophomore Julia Cohen wound up a took a slapshot from the blueline that fluttered on its way in and moved over the right shoulder of Pioneer goaltender Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) and into the corner of the net.
The teams combined for three goals in the first two minutes of the second period. Arnone got things started with a power play goal 25 seconds into the period as she carried the puck up the ice herself, made a couple of fancy moves past the defense and slid the puck into the net.
Wesleyan answered back 1:14 later as Antoinette Zosherafatain scored on a feed from Jessica Fischer. However, Arnone struck again just 12 seconds later, converting a feed from freshman Brittany Rosselle (Pawling, NY) to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead, which they would hold heading to the final period. The assist was Roselle's first point as a Pioneer.
McLaughlin scored 8:22 into the third for the Pioneers third power play goal of the night. The junior picked up a loose puck in the corner of the offensive zone, moved out in front of the net and slammed the puck past Stemerman to give Sacred Heart an insurance goal.
The Pioneers controlled the offensive play for long stretches, out shooting the Cardinals 42-22 for the game. Boulay made 20 saves to earn the victory while Stemerman stopped 38 shots in a losing effort.
The Pioneers are back in action this weekend when they host Robert Morris University in a two game series. The teams meet Friday night at 7:00 pm and Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm at the Wonderland of Ice.
