W. LONG BRANCH, NJ - Freshman pitcher Ryan Buch held the Sacred Heart baseball team to just one hit over 6 2/3 innings, while shortstop Kyle Higgins drove home a pair of runs in the fifth off SHU ace Jay Monti to lead Monmouth University to a 3-0 win in the opening game of a Northeast Conference doubleheader Friday.
Monti, 8-3, held Monmouth hitless through the first four innings for the Pioneers. However, the Hawks got four hits in the fifth including an RBI single by Brett Holland and the two-run double by Higgins to take a 3-0 lead.
The lone Pioneer hit was a leadoff infield single by Jason Maiella in the fifth, but he was stranded there.
Buch, who walked four batters in the game, walked two in the seventh inning. Justin Esposito came on and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, however he struck out pinch hitter Jamie Morales to end the game and earn his seventh save of the season.
