How It Happened
Stony Brook struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Sacred Heart quickly responded in the second as Jacob Schmutz and Dave Yorke worked walks before Nathan Bowes laid down a sacrifice bunt. Chuck Tallman followed with an RBI single to score Schmutz, then stole second, and JW Fitzgerald drew a walk before Ronan Donohue was hit by a pitch to bring in Yorke and give the Pioneers an early edge.
Sacred Heart added on in the third when Gavin Donohue tripled down the left field line and later scored on a Schmutz single to extend the lead to 3–1.
In the fourth, Ronan Donohue walked and came around to score on a Gavin Donohue double, pushing the advantage to 4–1, while Graham Willerer added another strikeout on the mound.
Stony Brook answered with a four-run fifth to take the lead, but the Pioneers responded again in the sixth. Ronan Donohue singled and advanced into scoring position before moving to third on a flyout. Gavin Donohue drove him in with a sacrifice fly, and Schmutz later scored on a wild pitch after reaching and advancing on an error to put Sacred Heart back in front, 6–5.
The Pioneers broke things open late, starting in the seventh when Tallman walked and Peter Link launched a two-run home run to extend the lead. Fitzgerald reached and stole second, and after another Ronan Donohue walk, Gavin Donohue added an RBI single to make it 8–5. In the eighth, Kyle Cincinnati walked ahead of another two-run homer from Link, his second of the game, and Sacred Heart added another run on a throwing error to build a comfortable cushion.
On the mound, Willerer and Christian Trantino each recorded strikeouts early, while Andrew Sager struck out two in the seventh, Jase Schueller added a strikeout in the eighth, and Hector Alejandro closed it out with a strikeout in the ninth to secure the win.
