Cher King scored the game's only goal and UMass controlled the action all night the Minutewomen topped Sacred Heart, 1-0 in field hockey action Wednesday night. The Minutewomen outshot the Pioneers, 23-1. Junior Kristen McIntire (Avon, CT) was the star of the game for the Pioneers, making 11 saves in goal to keep the game close.
The Minutewomen struck early when King scored UMass' first goal of the season only 5:45 into the game. Junior midfielder Erin Parker sent a pass from the left edge of the circle that found its way to the stick of King five yards in front of the goal. She blasted a shot by McIntire giving the home team the 1-0 lead.
Junior Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) had the best scoring chance of the night for SHU. With 6:55 to go in the game, she took a pass in the center of the circle 10 yards in front of the UMass goal. Before she could get a shot off, UMass' Erin O'Brien knocked the ball away and the Minutewomen cleared the ball to end the threat. Senior Jenn Howley (North Salem, NY) registered the only shot of the game for Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers will participate in the Hofstra Invitational this weekend, which will be held at Columbia. SHU's first game will be against Rhode Island on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
