Bridgeport, CT - Rachel White scored two goals, including the game winner late in third period, to lead New England College to a 4-3 win over Sacred Heart in women's ice hockey action Saturday at the Wonderland of Ice.
White's game winner came with just 1:19 left in regulation. She took a pass from Jaime Collins, skated into the slot and snapped a shot that beat SHU goaltender Jessica Little (Fishers, IN) for the final tally of a seesaw game.
The Pilgrims got on the board first when Sarah Graham notched an unassisted tally at the 7:28 mark of the first period. Freshman Lauren Fontaine (Windsoer, ON) scored the first of her two goals 45 seconds into the second period to tie the score.
Senior Sarah Hickman (Amherst, MA) gave the Pioneers their first lead of the day with a powerplay goal at the 8:04 mark of the second period. However, just 36 seconds later, White scored her first goal of the game to even the score again.
The teams traded powerplay goals in the third period. Danielle Taylor gave the Pilgrims a 3-2 lead with 8:09 left off a feed from Stefanie Lewis who had two assists on the day. Fontaine got the Pioneers even again with 5:41 left on a one-time shot off a feed from Hickman.
The Pioneers outshot the Pilgrims 30-29 for the game. Mary Roux made 27 saves to earn the victory for NEC while Little stopped 25 shots in a losing effort for SHU.
Sacred Heart will host a pair of midweek matinees with Southern Maine this week. The teams will meet Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice. Face-off Tuesday is set for 1:00 pm.
