OLD WESTBURY, NY - Senior Mike LaLuna drove in three runs, including a two-run homer, and his teammates took advantage of four Sacred Heart errors as New York Tech defeated the Pioneers 7-5 Friday afternoon.
NY Tech, 2-3, scored four runs in the first off SHU starter Mick Oswald thanks to three hits and a pair of Pioneer errors. Second baseman Jerry Smith drove in two of them with a two-out single.
SHU, 1-10, got one back in the top of the second on a ground out by Paul Schmidt that scored Ryan Lynch, who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
Smith gave NYIT a 5-1 lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning, driving home Effrey Valdez who had singled and stole second.
The Pioneers tied the game with four runs in the top of the fourth. Schmidt had the big blow of the inning with a three run homer, his second of the season.
The Bears retook the lead with a pair unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. Christian Dienna reached on an error to start the inning and LaLuna blasted a homer to give NYIT the 7-5 lead.
The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Fordham.
