How It Happened
Iona struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Mitch Hawkins settled in early, recording a strikeout in the second.
Sacred Heart responded in the third as Kyle Cincinnati and Peter Link both singled before JW Fitzgerald delivered an RBI single to bring home Cincinnati and even the score at 1–1.
Iona answered quickly with two runs in the bottom half, but the Pioneers continued to chip away in the fourth. Jacob Schmutz worked a walk and CJ Nolan followed with a single before Will Cook drove in Schmutz with an RBI knock to cut the deficit to 3–2.
The Gaels created separation in the fourth with three more runs, but Sacred Heart responded again in the fifth. Link led off with a double and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Fitzgerald before Ronan Donohue came through with an RBI double to make it 6–3.
On the mound, Hector Alejandro provided solid relief, recording strikeouts in both the sixth and eighth innings to keep the Pioneers within reach.
