Bridgeport, CT-In a game with 102 total shots on goal the Bowdoin Polar Bears downed the Pionners 7-6 in overtime Tuesday night at the Wonderland of Ice. Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) and Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) both notched two goals and four total points in the loss. Raelene Sydor (St. Albert, AB) entered the game midway through the first period and made 33 saves, including 18 in the third period.
Bowdoin (2-7-0) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as Dominique Lozzi, Michaela Calnan, and Alexandra Fahey all lit the lamp for the Polar Bears. After Bowdoin's third score head coach Tom O'Malley pulled starting goaltender Amanda Nagel (Greenwood, MN) in favor of Sydor.
Sacred Heart (8-11-2) trimmed the lead to one with markers from Fontaine and Arnone. Chelsea Young stretched the Bowdoin lead back to two just 15 seconds after Arnone's goal. Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA) capped the scoring of a crazy first stanza with her seventh goal of the season, bringing the score to 4-3 at the first intermission. The Pioneers outshot the Polar Bears 25-17 in a fast and frantic first frame.
The Pioneers dominated the second period outshooting Bowdoin 22-10 and scoring the only three markers of the period. The goals from Jaclyn Rideout (Wilmington, MA), Arnone, and Fontaine gave Sacred Heart a 6-4 lead and a 47-27 advantage in shots at the end of two periods.
The ice was tilted in the opposite direction the entire third period as Sacred Heart showed the effects of playing seven games in just 12 days. The Polar Bears fired 20 shots on goal in the third period to only six for SHU. Bowdoin took advantage of a sloppy Pioneer power play and scored short-handed twice to knot the game at six.
Overtime lasted just 55 seconds before Lozzi buried the golden goal to give Bowdoin its second win of the season. Posting the only two shots of overtime Bowdoin was still outshot 53-49 in the game. The Pioneers will get little rest as they travel to Oswego for a weekend series January 16-17. Sacred Heart returns to the Wonderland of Ice Monday January 19 to take on Connecticut College and Tuesday January 20 as they square off with Wesleyan.
