The Pioneers fired an amazing 72 shots on goal as Sacred Heart defeated Wesleyan 6-1 Tuesday night. SHU used second period goals from Allie Gillman (Montreal, QC), Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN), and Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, RI) to pull away from the Cardinals. The Pioneers sealed the game with a dominating third period, outshooting Wesleyan 32-6.
Wesleyan (2-12-1) struck first as Hannah Jackson beat Amanda Nagel (Greenwood, MN) low to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) found herself on a breakaway but was stoned by the right pad of Cardinal goaltender Rachel Stemerman. Despite putting 17 shots on goal the Pioneers were unable to light the lamp early and trailed 1-0 after the first period.
Sacred Heart (12-11-2) got an early scare as Jackson nearly had her second goal of the game just 30 seconds into the second frame but found only the left goal post. The Pioneers then earned a 4-0 break after catching the Cardinals on a change but Fontaine was again turned away, this time by a fantastic glove save. Stemerman would finish the game with 66 saves as the Cardinals defense offered their goaltender little help.
After a wave of continual pressure the Pioneers broke through as Gillman was able to score on a backhand in the slot despite being pushed to the ice. Hartman gave the Pioneers the lead as she banged home a loose rebound for her second goal of the year. With SHU on the attack Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, RI) gathered the puck in the corner and skated around the boards to the blue line uncovered. The sophomore forward then fired a wrist shot through traffic that found the net via the five hole.
The Pioneers added three insurance goals as they dominated the third period from start to finish. Caitlin Gottwald notched her second goal of the year, an unassisted marker coming on a blue line slap shot. Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) scored the last two Sacred Heart goals bringing her season tally to 20. Lauren Towers (West Hartford, CT), Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT), and Fontaine all earned assists in the game as Kristina Hankins (Lexington, MA) notched two helpers.
Sacred Heart will have two weeks off after skating 11 games in 19 days, posting a 7-2-2 record. The Pioneers return to action February 6th as they travel to Moon Township, PA to take on Robert Morris. The Colonials will be looking to avenge a 4-3 upset loss at the hands of Sacred Heart from December 16th. SHU returns home the following weekend as they welcome the Orange of Syracuse University to the Wonderland of Ice.
