Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) scored all three third period goals for Sacred Heart in a 5-4 Tuesday afternoon victory over Southern Maine. Jaclyn Rideout (Wilmington, MA) and Tara Kent (Glenview, IL) also notched goals for the Pioneers. Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) contributed to the win with two assists in the final period.
Sacred Heart (6-10-1) fell behind 2-0 early as Danielle Ward lit the lamp twice in the first seven minutes for the Huskies. The Pioneers settled down and cut the deficit in half on Rideout's fourth marker of the season. The Huskies took advantage of a power play late in the second period to extend the lead back to two goals. Kent answered for the Pioneers with a tally of her own just 1:20 later to send the game into the second intermission at 3-2. Defenseman Jennifer Burroughs (Raleigh, NC) recorded her first career point on the play.
Southern Maine (7-4-0) found themselves on the penalty kill in the opening moments of the third period as Christen Hart was whistled for tripping. During the power play Arnone found herself alone on a breakaway but was pulled down from behind. The play resulted in a penalty shot and Arnone converted to knot the game at three. The Pioneers took their first lead of the day with eight minutes to play on a power play goal from Arnone, assisted by Fontaine.
The Huskies responded in just 1:11 to tie the game at four on Danielle Ward's third goal of the afternoon. With 3:50 to play Arnone scored what proved to be the game winner on her third goal of the period and 105th point of her career. The Huskies found themselves on the power play for the final two minutes of the game but the SHU penalty kill was able to seal the Pioneers sixth win of the season.
Sacred Heart outshot the Huskies 36-22 in the first game of the weekend series. The Pioneers will look for the series sweep in tomorrow's finale, game time is set for 2:00 pm.
