The Sacred Heart women's hockey team scored five unanswered goals, including four in the third period, as they defeated Neumann College 5-4 Friday night. Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) scored the Pioneers first goal with the Pioneers down two skaters. Sophomore Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, RI) capped the scoring with what proved to be the game winner.
Sacred Heart (7-10-2) fell behind early as Jasper Thomson scored the first period's only goal for the Knights. Neumann (6-6-0) extended its lead midway through the second period as Kayla Dubowski found the net at 8:41. Fontaine scored an unassisted goal, her 9th marker of the season, with two Pioneers serving penalties.
Sacred Heart tied the game just 32 seconds into the third period as Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) lit the lamp with an assist from LaPierre. Kristina Hankins (Lexington, MA) put the Pioneers on top for the first time as Dunlop added the assist. Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) extended the Pioneer lead to 4-2 with a goal in her sixth consecutive game. LaPierre netted Sacred Heart's final goal with 12:39 to play with assists from Jaclyn Rideout (Wilmington, MA) and Dunlop.
The Knights mounted a comeback and scored two goals in under two minutes and were down only with 6:26 to play. Neumann added an extra skater with 59 seconds left on the clock but the Pioneer defense stood tall to preserve the win.
Sacred Heart outshot the Knights 41-27 and Amanda Nagel (Greenwood, MN) made 23 saves in the winning effort. Neither was able to convert on the power play, the Pioneers went 0-6 and the Knights posted no goals in four attempts. SHU, now 3-1-2 in its last six games, will look for the series sweep over Neumann tomorrow night at 7:00pm.
