Brooklyn, NY - The Sacred Heart men's soccer
team kept its playoff hopes alive Sunday afternoon with a 2-1
overtime victory over Long Island. Freshman Justin Brewer
(Somers, CT) scored a goal early in the second half to bring the
game level at one. Marcello Castro
(Parana, Brazil) found the game winning goal just three minutes
into overtime with an assist from Giancarlo
Massaro (Woodbridge, CT).
Long Island (6-11, 3-6 NEC) outshot the Pioneers 10-2 in the
first half but SHU goalie Alex Fait (Ottawa,
Canada) made four of his six saves to keep his team in the
game. The Blackbirds would strike first in the 17th minute on
a Jakeem Johnson marker, Steve Jakubowki and Juan Lanza earned
assists on the play.
Sacred Heart (7-7-2, 4-4-1 NEC) tied the game ten minutes into
the second period as Aaorn Kiely (London, England) played a through
ball into the box that Brewer slipped past the keeper. The
Pioneers would earn the victory and three points in the standings
when Castro beat LIU goalkeeper John Connolly to Massaro's pass in
the penalty box and the freshman midfielder found the
back of the net for the first game winning goal of his career.
The Pioneers conclude their season this Friday, November 6, as
they take on Fairleigh Dickinson on Senior Night at Campus
Field. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
