Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Set pieces were the
key to a 2-1 overtime victory for Saint Francis (PA) over Sacred
Heart at Campus Field, Friday night. The Pioneers unbeaten
streak ended at five games as they fall to 8-3-1 overall and 3-1-1
in the Northeast Conference. The Red Flash improved to 7-3-1
overall and 3-0-1 in league play.
Just 2:30 into the extra frame senior Patrick Fleming took a
direct kick for SFPA from the left side that deflected off of
junior midfielder David Butler and past the SHU keeper for the game
winning score.
Sophomore defender Marcello
Castro (Parana, Brazil) put Sacred Heart on the board first in
the 29th minute. Castro's goal, his team-leading
fourth score of the season, was a direct kick bent softly to the
left side of the goal.
In the 68th minute, Fleming answered with a free kick
goal of his own to tie the game at one. The direct kick was
taken from nearly 30 yards out and was scored to the lower left
corner of the net. For Fleming, who entered the weekend
leading the NEC with 19 points, it was his seventh goal of the
season.
Saint Francis sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Valcicak stopped five
shots to earn the victory. In net for SHU, junior Alex Fait
(Ottawa, Ont.) went the entire game without making a save.
Sacred Heart is now 3-2-1 in overtime games this season.
Sacred Heart dominated the shot chart by outshooting Saint Francis
18-10 for the game.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday as they host Robert
Morris for a 12:00 noon match-up.
