SOMERSET, N.J. - Sophomore defender Marcello Castro was named
the adidas/Northeast Conference Player of the Week for the week
ending September 12. Castro proved to be the spark for
the Pioneers, who improved to a perfect 4-0 on the year with a par
of 2-1 overtime wins last week. Despite a move from central
midfield to the backline this season, the Panana, Brazil native
still provided the necessary offensive punch with a pair of key
tallies.
On Tuesday, Castro scored the equalizer against Siena in the 67th
minute with a header off a free kick taken by Lusiano Dadario. He tallied his third goal of the year on Saturday
against an Adelphi team ranked second in the Northeast region and
rated in the top-40 nationally. With the contest scoreless in
the 32nd minute, Castro launched a free kick that skipped under the
wall and into the net. Sacred Heart would go on to score the
game-winner in the 96th minute. Behind Castro, the Pioneers
are off to their best-ever start as a Division I program and were
ranked sixth in last week's NSCAA/HendrickCars.com
Northeast region poll.
