
Pioneer Soccer Loses to Yale in 108th Minute

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team lost a 2-1 double overtime decision at intrastate rival Yale, Saturday night. Junior defender Andy Hackbrath nailed a penalty kick in the 108th minute to give the home team the victory. For the Pioneers, it was their second straight loss, dropping them to 4-2 on the season. The win, their first of the season, improved the Bulldogs record to 1-5.
Sophomore forward Justin Brewer (Somers, Conn.) put Sacred Heart ahead, 1-0, with his first goal in the 24th minute. Freshman Konstantino Dekaneas (Ancaster, Ont.) picked up his first career point with an assist on the goal.
Yale came back to tie the game at one at the 60:22 mark when freshman forward Peter Jacobsen, assisted by freshman midfielder Cody Wilkins, notched his first goal of the season to force overtime.
Sophomore netminder Alex Fait (Ottawa, Ont.) made two saves for the Pioneers. In between the pipes for the Bulldogs, sophomore Bobby Thalman stopped one shot.
For the game, Yale outshot Sacred Heart 15-11x. The Bulldogs also held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Pioneers return to the pitch on Wednesday September 22 at Iona for a 3:00 pm contest.
