Freitas Nets Goal in 104th Minute, Earns SHU 2-1 Win Over Siena

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Senior midfielder Sergio Freitas (Edison, N.J.) lit up the scoreboard with his first goal of the season in the 104th minute to give the Sacred Heart University men's soccer team a 2-1 double overtime win over Siena on Campus Field, Tuesday night.  The win gives the Pioneers a perfect 3-0-0 start to the season, while the Saints dropped to 1-1-0 overall.

Freitas' goal was assisted by sophomore midfielder Brian Francolini (Ellington, Conn.).  Francolini brought the ball up the right side of the field and lifted a cross into the box where Freitas drilled the ball into the back of the net, with his head, for the game winning score.

Sacred Heart junior goalkeeper Alex Fait (Ottawa, Ont.) kept Siena off the board through much of the first half.  Saint red-shirt senior Anthony Tagliaferri split the SHU defense in the 26th minute and fired a shot at the Pioneer net only to be turned away by a sprawling Fait.  Nearly 10 minutes later Fait shut down senior Joe Tavernese one-on-one.

Siena would get a goal before the close of the first half.  In the 42nd minute sophomore forward Sindre Ek scored on a pass delivered by Tavernese.

In the second stanza, Fait was brilliant.  Just four minutes into the frame he blocked a near post shot taken by freshman Falko Friedrichs.  In the 60th minute, Fait made a leaping save on a header by Tagliaferri and stuffed a point blank shot by Friedrichs to keep the Pioneers within one.

At the 66:10 mark Sacred Heart tied the game.  Sophomore defender Marcello Castro (Panana, Brazil) notched his second goal of the season on a header that came off a free kick taken by senior midfielder Lusiano Dadario (East Haven, Conn.) from the right side.

For the game, Fait totaled a season-high seven saves.

The Saints outshot the Pioneers 17-7 in a game that lasted 103:49.  The two teams also combined for 37 fouls.

Sacred Heart hits the road for its first away contest of the season as it travels to Adelphi for a 7:00 pm contest this Saturday, September 11.
