Men's Soccer Keeps Playoff Push Alive with 3-1 Win at Mount St. Mary's

Box Score

(Emmitsburg, MD) – Marcello Castro (Panana, Brazil) scored twice and Justin Brewer (Somers, CT) added the game-winning goal in a huge 3-1 win for the Sacred Heart Men's Soccer team to keep their playoff hopes alive.   With the win, SHU moves into fifth place and the final playoff spot with one game to go.

Castro opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 12th minute, stealing the ball in the box and flipping it just over the reach of the on-charging Mount goalkeeper Peter Steve.

The Mountaineers tied it in the 50th minute on a goal by Mark Plaisance, who took a pass from Dillon Johnson and fired a shot from the edge of the 18-foot box inside the near post.

Brewer answered nine minutes later, sent in on a rush by Ronaldo Vieira (Framingham, MA) to drill a far-post shot streaking down the right side.  Castro added his team-leading ninth of the season with a wicked bender into the top right corner of the goal on a free kick from the top left corner of the 18-foot box.

Sacred Heart now has 15 points on the season and closes out the regular season at Monmouth on Sunday at 1:00 pm with a chance to clinch a playoff berth against a Hawk team that sits two points higher than the Pioneers in fourth place (CCSU is in third, but is not eligible for NEC Tournament play this season).  St. Franics (PA) is within striking distance as well in sixth place with 14 points.
