Seniors Shine In 2-0 Win On Senior Day Over Fairleigh Dickinson

Box Score
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's soccer team got goals from seniors Marcelo Simoes (Ouro Fino, Brazil) and Joey Lyons (Hauppauge, N.Y.) to earn a 2-0 win on Senior Day over the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights at Campus Field Sunday.

Simoes and Lyons, along with fellow seniors Aaron Burrell (Tampa, Fla.), Ronaldo Vieira (Farmington, Mass.), Andrew Borts (Barrington, R.I.), Konstantine Dekaneas (Ancaster, Ont.), and Evan Kennedy (Newtown, Conn.) were honored prior to Sunday's game with a special Senior Day ceremony.

Fairleigh Dickinson (9-8-1, 2-4-1 NEC) controlled possession early, taking three shots in the first 16 minutes. Sacred Heart (5-13, 2-5 NEC) goalkeeper Tucker Hackett (Madison, Conn.) needed to make only one save on those first three Knights' attempts. Lyons had the first shot for the Pioneers in the game, but his attempt at goal in the 17th minute went wide. Sacred Heart got on the scoreboard in the 29th minute when Simoes jumped on a loose ball in the FDU penalty area and fired a shot across the goalmouth and in to make the score 1-0. Lyons almost put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 in the 43rd minute, but Knights goalkeeper Jacob Lissek stopped his shot and Sacred Heart had to settle for a 1-0 lead at halftime.

FDU controlled possession in the second half, outshooting Sacred Heart 10-3. The Pioneers' defense in the second half was stalwart as Hackett made two saves early in the half to preserve the 1-0 lead. The Knight had their best opportunity to tie the game in the 88th minute when Godfred Baafi had a header go wide with the Pioneers net wide open. On the ensuing goal kick, Hackett hit a long ball that found Lyons onside. Lyons then ran past the Knights' defense and scored to give Sacred Heart a 2-0 lead with 1:27 to play in the game.

Hackett made six saves for his second clean sheet in three games. Both teams had six corner kicks in the game as FDU outshot Sacred Heart 16-9.

Sacred Heart ends the 2013 season with a record of 5-13, going 2-5 in the Northeast Conference.
