Murphy Leads SHU to First Win of Season

Box Score

Thibodaux, LA – On the final day of their ten day trip to Louisiana senior captain John Murphy (Seymour, CT) led the way for the Pioneers going 4-5 at the plate, including his 200th career hit as a Pioneer, and knocking in four runs en route to a 7-4 win over the Nicholls State Colonels Sunday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field. It was Sacred Heart's first win of the season on their final game of an eight game stretch in Louisiana over Spring Break.

Murphy put the Pioneers on the board first with an RBI single up the middle, scoring freshman Jesus Medina (New York, NY) who started the inning off with a single of his own. Murphy would come around on a Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) double to left center field to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) singled to left field with the bases loaded to score Billy McDonough (Ballston Spa, NY) and Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) to double the Sacred Heart lead to 4-0.

Murphy would strike again the in the seventh inning singling home senior captain Jonathan Servilla (Fairfield, CT) to stretch the lead to 5-0.

The Colonels cut in to the Pioneers lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Cody Dufrene led off the inning for Nicholls, singling through the left side. Tyler Duplantis followed Drufrene with a single of his own. Both Duplantis and Dufrene would advance to second and third on a pass ball. A walk to Zachary LeBeouf would load the bases for Nicholls with one out in the inning. Dufrene would score on a fielder's choice while Duplantis would come around on a Pioneers error.

Murphy would add some much needed insurance in the eighth inning, doubling to right field, scoring Servilla and Flint. Flint and Servilla both reached base on walks.

Nicholls added two more in the ninth inning on a Keith Cormier base hit to right center scoring two Colonels. Sacred Heart shut the door from there holding on for the 7-4 victory.

Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) was very impressive in his second start of the season. The junior gave up just two runs on four hits in 7.1 innings of work. Leiningen is now 1-1 on the season.

Sacred Heart now returns home to take on the UCONN Huskies at Harbor Yard on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch set for 3 PM.
