Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's soccer team drew even with the Siena Saints 10 minutes into Sunday's home opener at Campus Field, but the Saints proved to be too much as Siena won the match 4-1.
Senior Aaron Burrell (Tampa, Fla.) scored Sacred Heart's (0-2) first goal of the 2013 season in the 11th minute Sunday, heading in the rebound of a Callum Smith (London, England) header that hit the crossbar to make the score 1-1. Siena (1-0) opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Falko Friedrichs headed in a James Beeston cross. The two sides traded possession until the 31st minute, when Beeston put a free kick past Pioneers goalkeeper Tucker Hackett (Madison, Conn.) from about 20 yards out to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. Ronaldo Vieira (Farmington, Mass.) had an opportunity to draw Sacred Heart level in the final minute of the half, but his shot was stopped by Siena keeper Adam Myers.
The Pioneers had another opportunity to tie the match in the 60th minute as Kieran Walsh (River Vale, N.J.) had an opening 25 yards from goal. However, his shot was wide of the target. Siena then went down the field and tacked on its third goal as Tom Allen and Mike Matera setup Beeston for a goal from inside the 18-yard box. The Saints added another goal late in the second half to make the final score 4-1.
Siena outshot Sacred Heart 16-8 for the match, putting eight shots on goal to the Pioneers' two. Burrell, Vieira, and Walsh each had two shots. Hackett made four saves for Sacred Heart, three of which were in the second half. Each team had two corner kick opportunities.
The Pioneers return to Campus Field on Tuesday, Sept. 3 for a 7 p.m. match against NJIT.
