Pioneers Battle Back from Three Down but Fall 4-3 at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, NH – After six combined goals in the first period, the Franklin Pierce Ravens scored the seventh and final goal of the game 4:36 into the third period to escape with a 4-3 win Friday night over the Sacred Heart Pioneers. Sacred Heart falls to 5-11-5 on the season, while FPU improves to 16-2.

Franklin Pierce scored three goals in a minute and 13 seconds in the first period, only to be quickly answered by Sacred Heart with three goals of their own to tie the game in the opening period.

Karsyn Baker got the scoring started for the Ravens, scoring an unassisted goal at 9:44 of the first. Less than a minute later, Michaela Faia found the back of the net for FPU, assisted by Baker and Colleen Doucette. Just 38 seconds later, Katie Flynn scored the Ravens third goal of the period and put SHU behind 3-0. Flynn was assisted by Francesca Paciello and Jamie Wiley.

Down 3-0 in a blink of an eye, the Pioneers quickly got to work in tying the game. Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, MA) narrowly put one past FPU goaltender Noelle White to put SHU on the board at 14:24 of the first period. The Pioneers' leading scorer was assisted by freshman Amie Varano (Duxbury, MA). Hannah Skelley (Wolfeboro, NH) put back a rebound to score the Pioneers' second goal of the game to put them within one goal at 15:59 of the first. Whitney Henderson (Elkins, PA) and Jennie Robinson (Hyde Park, NY) notched assists on the play. The Pioneers brought it all the way back with 53 seconds left in the first. Natasha Klinoff (Concord, MA) deflected home a Megan Ofner (Hamilton, NJ) shot from the left point to tie the game at three. The Pioneers scored three goals on just eight shots to tie the game up.

After a scoreless second period, Flynn scored the game-winning goal at 4:36 of the third period. Assisted by Barker and Doucette, Flynn found the top right corner of the net to put FPU ahead 4-3.

Sacred Heart goalie Alexius Schutt made 26 saves in the loss. The Pioneers wre outshot 30-22. 

The Pioneers and Ravens are right back at it tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm.
