FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers scored twice in the final four minutes to beat the Sacred Heart men's soccer team 2-1 at Campus Field Friday afternoon. The game marked the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.
Sacred Heart (0-10-1, 0-1 NEC) scored first on its first shot of the game. Junior midfielder Mahmoud Kafel (Fairfield, Conn.) forced a turnover just outside the St. Francis 18-yard box, took a couple touches on the ball, and chipped a shot over Terriers goalkeeper Jack Binks to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Sacred Heart controlled possession early and often in the first half, outshooting the Terriers 3-2 in the period. St. Francis' best opportunity to score in the first came in the 40th minute when Grei Mujko got behind the Pioneers defense, but Sacred Heart goalkeeper Tucker Hackett (Madison, Conn.) poked the ball away from him to end the threat.
The Pioneers nearly made the game 2-0 early in the second half as Ermir Celaj (Brookfield, Conn.) headed wide a corner kick. Eight minutes later, Celaj let loose a bicycle kick from 10 yards out that Binks had to knock over the crossbar. The Terriers came close to tying the game in the 64th minute but Fabian Suele's header inside the six-yard box went right into Hackett's hands. Just as it looked like the Pioneers had the three points secure, St. Francis' Paul Galimi put a long throw into the 18 yard box. Through a sea of players, John Makaya found the ball and scored to level the match at 1-1. With less than a minute to play, the Terriers took the lead. Salvatore Barone took the ball off of Hackett as he attempted a free kick, guiding the ball into the net to give St. Francis a 2-1 lead. Sacred Heart was not able to get another shot on goal as the Terriers took the win and three conference points.
St. Francis outshot Sacred Heart 12-8 for the game, firing 10 shots in the second half. Hackett made four saves with Binks stopping two shots.
The Pioneers travel to Central Connecticut Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.
