Box Score SHELTON, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's hockey team earned a split of its weekend home-and-home series with the Franklin Pierce Ravens Saturday night, winning 3-1 at The Sports Center of Connecticut. Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, Mass.) had two points in the game as goaltender Amanda Fontaine (Northfield, Mass.) made 36 saves.
Sacred Heart (3-5-0) got on the scoresheet at 14:07 of the first period. The Pioneers were shorthanded when Stathopoulos caused a turnover at center ice, skated in all alone and put the past right between the legs of Franklin Pierce (7-2-1) goaltender Shannon O'Neil. The Pioneers outshot the Ravens 10-7 in the opening period, but Franklin Pierce let loose a barrage of shots over the next two periods.
The Ravens outshot Sacred Heart 18-3 in the second period. However, the Pioneers extended their lead at 7:27 of the middle period on a power play goal by Briana Connolly (Duxbury, Mass.). Stathopoulos won the opening faceoff of that power play, getting the puck to Connolly who scored her second goal of the season. Franklin Pierce cut the deficit to one with 2:03 remaining in the second period. Karsyn Baker pounced on a loose puck in the slot and scored to get the Ravens within one goal, 2-1, heading into the third period. The Pioneers extended the lead back to two 3:16 into the third period. Freshman Taylor Moreland (Pleasant Prairie, Wisc.) scored her first career goal off assists from Brittany Smith (Manchester, Mass.) and Emily Falvey (Hingham, Mass.) to make the score 3-1. Fontaine made 12 saves in the final period as Sacred Heart killed three power plays to win the game by two goals.
Franklin Pierce outshot Sacred Heart 37-16. The Pioneers were 1-for-3 on the power play as the Ravens went scoreless on five power plays.
Sacred Heart is back in action on Saturday, January 3, 2015 against Saint Anselm at The Sports Center of Connecticut.
