The Sacred Heart University football team improved to 3-0 with a 44-14 victory over Assumption College Saturday evening on Campus Field. Chris Rogers (Cazenovia, N.Y.) became the Pioneers all-time leader in PAT's with five and moved into a tie for the career record with his three field goals on the night.
The Pioneers did not take long getting on the board as RJ Noel (Lowell, Mass.) connected with Moses Webb (Manassas, Va.) on a 38-yard touchdown strike 3:38 into the game. Tyler Dube (Southington, Conn.) was on the receiving end of a three-yard Noel pass with 5:35 to play in the first quarter as the Pioneers build a 14-0 lead. Assumption answered on its next drive, cutting the deficit in half when Trevor Vasey connected with Eddy Frazier from nine-yards out.
Rogers converted his first field goal, a 20-yard effort, just 15 ticks into the second quarter, for a 17-7 Pioneer advantage. The Greyhounds scored their final points as Sam Blake made a leaping catch and scampered 62-yards for a score. Rogers's second field goal, this time from 34-yards, came with 7:06 remaining in the first-half and giving SHU a 20-14 edge. Sean Bell's 18-yard TD run, with a Rogers's conversion, gave the Pioneers a 27-14 halftime lead.
Bell scored the only touchdown of the third quarter, with a one-yard run, and Rogers' conversion tied him for the school career record. He would tie the field goal record on his 21-yard make early in the fourth quarter, and his PAT following Shane Scambray's (Monarch Beach, Calif.) first career touchdown run with 3:19 to play. The Scambray TD was set up by a Robert Johnson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) blocked field goal that was returned 60-yards by Preston Sanford (Birmingham, Ala.)
Rogers finished the night with 115 career PAT's, surpassing Chris Redican (1999-2002). The two are tied with 38 career field goals.
Noel threw for 187 yards and ran for 131 more to pace the Pioneer offense. He completed two touchdown passes on the night and was the game's leading rusher. Bell finished with 79 yards on 17 carries, while Dube made six catches for 46 yards. Webb led all receivers with 85 yards.
The SHU defense held the Greyhounds to only 208 total offensive yards, and just 45 on the ground. Dennis Regan (Philadelphia, Pa.), Connor Candito (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and TaMaric Wilson (Alexandria, Va.) all had six tackles to lead the effort. Regan had two TFL's, while Kevin Barry (River Edge, N.J.) finished with 2.5 FL's, 1.5 sacks and five total tackles.
Sacred Heart concludes its four-game homestand on Saturday, September 20th when it hosts Bucknell. The 1 p.m. game is part of the University's annual homecoming celebration.
