LOWELL, Mass. – The Sacred Heart men's soccer team outshot the UMass Lowell River Hawks 15-12 on Saturday at Cushing Field but could not score in a 2-0 loss.

Sacred Heart (0-8-1) had the first two shots of the day, as Mahmoud Kafel (Fairfield, Conn.) had a shot on goal saved by UMass Lowell's (3-7) Austin Kroll in the third minute. Seconds later, Shaquille Saunchez (Kingston, Jamaica) put a shot wide. He also had a shot saved by Kroll in the fifth minute. In the 13^th minute, the River Hawks' Wuilito Fernandes hit the goal post. Homero Morais followed up that shot with another chance to score but was stymied by Pioneers goalkeeper Tucker Hackett (Madison, Conn.). UMass Lowell got on the scoresheet in the 22^nd minute when Carlos Ruiz played a ball to Guilherme Rodrigues, who got behind the Sacred Heart defense and buried a low show to make the score 1-0. Kafel came close to tying the game in the 31^st minute, but Kroll kept his attempt out of the net as UMass Lowell took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Hackett did his part to keep Sacred Heart in the game in the second half, making three saves in the first 18 minutes. The Pioneers had their first shot on goal in the second half come in the 75^th minute when Andrew Butterworth (Haverhill, Mass.) tested Kroll to make a save. The River Hawks extended their lead to 2-0 in the 81^st minute. Bryan Amaris took a Morais feed and beat Hackett one-on-one for his first goal of the year. The Pioneers put three shots on goal in the final eight minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net as Kroll earned the clean sheet for UMass Lowell.

The Pioneers had eight shots on goal, leading to eight saves by Kroll. Hackett made four saves for Sacred Heart.

Sacred Heart is back on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 1 for a 7 p.m. game at NJIT.
