NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Sacred Heart field hockey team jumped to a first half lead against Hofstra on Friday afternoon before eventually falling 3-2. The match was played at Yale University.
Rachel Claroni opened the scoring in the 27th minute for the Pioneers (1-2). Following a foul against the Pride, Claroni was able to find room in the circle to unleash a backhanded strike that found the back of the net. For Claroni, it was her first goal of the season.
Hofstra (2-1) would bounce back from surrendering that opening goal and go on to score the next three. With it looking as if SHU would go into the half with a lead, the Pride's Claudia Marin Samper managed to equalize with less than five minutes remaining in the period. Hofstra then came out strong to open the second half scoring two goals in the opening eight minutes. Simca Schoen scored just over four minutes into the frame and then Samper added her second of the game less than four minutes later.
Lauren Harrison tried to spark a Sacred Heart comeback when she cut the deficit to 3-2 with 16 minutes remaining. She put a Kylee Lowndes centering pass into the back of the net for her second goal in as many games.
SHU goalkeeper Mary Altepeter had a strong performance in the defeat saving eight shots. Carys Swan recorded three saves to pick up the victory. On the day, the Pride outshot the Pioneers 20-12. Liz Bergman led Sacred Heart with six shots.
SHU will return to New Haven tomorrow to face Yale. The game is scheduled to start at 4 PM.
