PHILADELPHIA - The Sacred Heart women's fencing team travelled to the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday for the Philadelphia Invitational, where it defeated Johns Hopkins 16-11 and Drew 23-4 while losing to Duke 21-6, Northwestern 19-8, North Carolina 17-10 and Penn 18-9.
The epee squad had a winning record for the day, with an overall 29-25 record. All of the starters had winning records, with Caitlin Stanton and Megan Floyd going 10-8 and Mia Volpe 9-8. Taylor Walsh led the saber squad with a 10-7 record and Julia Greene supported with a 9-8 mark. Freshman Bailey Partridge had her best day of the season with a 9-9 record.
"We had a solid performance today against some very strong competition", said Head Coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "I was very happy with the progress shown by our freshmen starters Bailey Partridge and Caitlin Stanton. They no longer are fencing like rookies and have become an important part of our success. This event always toughens us for our home stretch events. Our team has a good opportunity to win all six matches at the final meet of our Northeast Fencing Conference slate to finish with an 11-1 record. This will equal our record from last season and help us win the combined men's and women's title."
The Pioneers are back in action at Yale on Saturday, January 31. Action starts at 1 PM.
