BOSTON – Matt Dean earned the Sacred Heart University men's tennis team's lone point on Sunday morning as the Pioneers lost at Boston University, 6-1. The loss drops SHU to 0-2, while the Terriers improve to 1-0 in their first dual match of the season.
Dean's victory, in third singles, came after getting swept in the first set. He bounced back with a thrilling 7-4 tiebreak victory in the second set to send the match into a decisive third. Dean would win that third set comfortably 6-2.
Justin Pagan dropped a heartbreaking three set thriller at first singles. After splitting the first two sets, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, Pagan and William Kwok battled back and forth in the final set that was ultimately won by Kwok, 11-9. Also falling in close fashion was Karan Narula at sixth singles. Narula first dropped a tiebreaker in the first set, 7-3, before losing another close one in the second, 7-5.
Pagan and partner Francisco Del Valle Diaz were leading in their match at second doubles, 4-3, before it went unfinished because BU had earned the doubles point by winning the first and third matches.
Sacred Heart will look for its first win of the season on Friday, February 6, when it travels to Monmouth for an 8 pm start.
