FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's soccer team participated in the JDRF One Walk at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk on Sunday.
The event is part of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's one goal, which is to "progressively remove the impact of Type-1 Diabetes from people's lives until we achieve a world without Type-1 Diabetes." Sunday's walk raised over $188,000.
The event was especially close to the SHU men's soccer team. Alumnus and former Sacred Heart soccer player Rui Moreira's son, Dylan, was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes at age three. Dylan is now nine and uses an insulin pump to control his glucose level.
"As a family we have vowed to normalize his life as much as possible," said Moreira. "Even with constant monitoring and glucose management, he's able to play soccer like any other child. Dylan has been kicking a soccer ball since he could walk, and now plays for Trumbull United."
"He's been attending SHU soccer games since he was a baby and loves coming to all the home games," Moreira added. "I personally would like to thank the men's soccer team, head coach Joe Barroso, and assistant coach Anthony Anzevui for showing up and volunteering at the JDRF Walk and supporting their number one fan, my son Dylan."
