Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart men's soccer team got a late goal from Shaquille Saunchez but could not score the equalizer, falling 2-1 to the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils Friday at Campus Field.
Saunchez scored in the 80th minute, finding a loose ball in the box off of a Kieran Walsh free kick and sending it into the goal. Central Connecticut (4-6-2, 2-1-0 NEC) got on the board in the 12th minute when Zach Zurita bent in a free kick to make the score 1-0. The Blue Devils extended their lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute when Zurita assisted on a Ryan Taylor goal. The Pioneers outshot Central Connecticut 20-10, but only had five shots on goal.
Sacred Heart (1-9-1, 0-4-0 NEC) travels to St. Francis Brooklyn for a 1 p.m. match Sunday.
First Half
- In the third minute, a Saunchez shot was blocked for a corner kick. Murray Cockburn's shot off that corner just missed the inside post.
- In the 8th minute a potential Sacred Heart goal was called off due to player being offside.
- Ezra Siyadhuba had a shot saved by CCSU goalkeeper Nick Velleca in the 27th minute.
- Dylan Santos had two headers both saved by Velleca in the 30th and 34th minute, respectively.
Second Half
- Walsh put a shot wide of goal five minutes into the half.
- Andy Hall had a header go wide in the 58th minute.
- Tucker Hackett saved a Freddy Metellus attempt at goal in the 61st minute.
- Santos, Callum Smith, and Ezra Siyadhuba each had a shot in the 62nd minute but didn't score.
- In the 67th minute, Hackett kept the score 2-0 by stopping a Louis Beddouri shot.
