Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Nicole Magee's career-high 43 saves were not enough, as Brown scored four goals in the final period to ultimately pull away from the Sacred Heart women's ice hockey team on Saturday evening, The loss drops the Pioneers to 0-3-0 to begin the season, while the Bears picked up their first win and are now 1-6-0.
Taylor Moreland cut a 2-0 second period deficit in half with her first goal of the season. It was her team-leading third point through the three games, as she extends her point streak to three games to open the season. Cassandra Hanlon assisted on the score that came with 3:57 left before the second intermission for her first point of the year.
Sacred Heart had an opportunity to tie the game, going on the power play with 11 seconds remaining in the second period, but Brown goalie Julianne Landry stopped a
Megan Finlay effort right before the horn. Coming out of the intermission still a man up,
Carly Radovich also had an attempt saved by Landry. Just 34 seconds after the penalty kill, the Bears would retake control with a goal by Bridget Carey with 17:37 showing on the clock.
After Teagan Ketchum and Casey Stathopoulos both had shots stopped by Landry, Brown put the game away for good with a goal at the 14:55 mark. The Bears would add two late goals, a power play goal with 2:49 left and one last score with just 11 seconds showing on the clock.
Despite that special teams score, bothpenalty kills played well as the two teams combined to go 1 for 13 on the power play. Opposite Magee, Landry made nine saves of relief of Monica Elvin, who earned the win with zero goals allowed in 11 stops in 32 plus minutes of action
Brown took the lead with Sam Donavan's goal midway through the first period with 10:12 remaining. Samantha Swanstrom doubled the lead with a score just 1:08 after the first intermission.
Sacred Heart returns to the Sports Center of Connecticut next weekend, hosting Rhode Island on Friday at 7 pm and Saturday at 3:30 pm.
