NEW HAVEN – Katie DeRienzo and Taylor Gurda both won matches as the Sacred Heart University women's tennis team fell to Providence, 5-2, on Saturday. The Pioneers now sit at 3-4 on the year.
DeRienzo survived a tough three set challenge at first singles, not clinching the victory until the she battled to an 11-9 triumph in the third set together. She got to that third set tiebreak by taking the second, 7-5, after falling in the first 6-4. The win is DeRienzo's seventh in a row, as the junior now sits at 13-3 overall, including a perfect 5-0 dual record.
Gurda's victory was also of the three set variety, as she won the tiebreak a little more comfortably, 10-7. Gurda had to bounce back in that third set after dropping the second 6-4. She earned a hard fought first set 7-5
DeRienzo also teamed with doubles partner Nicole Rydzewski to win the seconds doubles match, 8-6. It was the duos' fifth straight win, as the two improve to 6-2 together in 2014-15.
At fourth singles, Rydzewski was on the wrong end of a three setter in singles play, falling in the final two sets, 6-0, 6-3, after prevailing in the first 7-5. Also losing in three was Lindsey Post, who got swept in the second and third after taking the first, 6-4.
