LATHAM, N.Y. – After winning the doubles point, the Sacred Heart women's tennis teams won the fourth through sixth singles matches to defeat Siena 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. The win is the second straight for the Pioneers and fourth in fifth matches, as SHU is now 5-5 in 2014-15.
Lindsey Post sealed the victory with her straight set, 6-3, 6-3, victory at fourth singles. Taylor Gurda and Sabrina Navarro Lopez each were victorious in straight fashion as well, losing just three games each, allowing Post's victory to clinch the win. The two also extended their winning streaks to five and four games respectively. Katie DeRienzo saw her nine match win streak come to an end with a 6-1, 7-5 defeat at first singles.
Sacred Heart dominated doubles play with the Siena not winning more than four games in any of the three matches. Gurda teamed with Navarro as each went 2-0 on the day. Post also went 2-0 as she was a winner at first doubles with teammate Paige Olson. A DeRienzo and Nicole Rydzewski win wrapped up doubles play.
SHU will take part in a doubleheader with the men tomorrow against Holy Cross beginning at 1 pm. If the match is not able to take place at the Sacred Heart tennis courts, it will be relocated to Fairfield Warde High School. Stay tuned to SacredHeartPioneers.com for an announcement. Prior to the match, the Sacred Heart University men's and women's tennis program will host their 19th Annual Pioneer Tennis Brunch in the Board Room of the William H. Pitt Center at 10:30 am.
