FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's tennis team lost its final Northeast Conference match of the season on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 6-1 decision to Bryant at the Sacred Heart Tennis Courts. SHU ends its conference schedule at 0-3, and is now 3-12 overall. The Bulldogs improve to 6-10 and 1-2 in league action.
Anthony Savio won his second consecutive match, earning the Pioneers' lone point with a 6-4, 6-3 decision at sixth doubles. He ends NEC play with a 2-0 league record. Also winning on the afternoon was Matt Dean and Brian Power, who teamed together at first doubles for a thrilling 9-7 triumph. The two are now 2-1 in conference action and 6-5 in dual play when paired together.
After Dean's and Power's victory, SHU was close to earning the doubles point with a third doubles win, but Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen and teammate Cory Seltman were edged 8-6.
Sacred Heart suffered multiple three set setbacks in singles play. Pilote won the first set at second singles 6-1 before losing the second and third by identical 6-2 scores. Karan Narula swept the first set of his fifth singles match before dropping the final two sets 7-5, 6-2. Dean and Power also lost close first sets, 7-6 and 7-5, before being beaten in the second.
The Pioneers will play two final non-conference matches this week before heading to the Northeast Conference Championships on Friday. The first will come at cross-town rival Fairfield on Tuesday beginning at 3 pm.
