Sacred Heart Drops Series Finale to Bryant

Box Score

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Jesus Medina and Zack Short each had two hits, as the Sacred Heart baseball team dropped its series finale against Bryant 15-2 at Harbor Yard on Sunday afternoon. It is the seventh loss in eight games for SHU, who are now 15-26-1, as well as an even 8-8 in the Northeast Conference. Bryant moves to .500 at 20-20 and is now tied atop of the conference with an 11-5 record.

Medina drove in a run and scored twice in addition to his two hits, while Short also had a walk. Victor Sorrento drove in Jayson Sullivan's for Sacred Heart's other run. Breton LaRose and Connor Landers both had scoreless relief appearances, going two thirds of an inning and one inning respectively.

Bryant pounded out twenty hits on the afternoon, led by Jordan Mountford and Cole Fabio with three each. Buck McCarthy and Robby Rinn drove in five and three runs respectively, as each hit a three run home run. Starter Brandon Bingle tossed seven scoreless innings, scattering five hits and striking out five, and Alex Lagaos pitched a scoreless ninth.

Bryant scored four runs in the first and one more in the second before breaking it open with three in the sixth, two in the seventh, and five in the eight. The first eight runs all came with two outs, as Fabio's RBI single plated the first run of the game before McCarthy delivered a two RBI single, and the fourth scored on an error. The second inning run came in on a wild pitch.

After McCarthy's three run bomb in the sixth made it 8-0, Sacred Heart's best opportunity to chip into the lead came in the bottom half. Sullivan led off with a flyout to the left field fence in which AJ Zarozny made a leaping catch. Short then doubled with two outs before a Sorrento walk gave PJ DeFilippo an opportunity. The freshman looked to have come through, but again it was Zarozny making a leaping catch at the wall, bringing back what would have been a three run homer.

Matt Cooney was tabbed with the loss, as the freshman went just one inning, allowing three earned on two hits and two walks. Alex Perry pitched a one run second before Medina went the next 3.2 innings without giving up a run. McCarthy's sixth run homer was his lone blemish resulting in a final line of four innings, seven hits, and three earned. Taubl gave up two earned in the seventh before Lonardelli allowed five earned in the eighth.

Tied for third in the NEC, Sacred Heart will play a crucial conference series next weekend against first place Wagner. First pitch of game one will be at 6:30 pm at Harbor Yard.
