Women's Soccer Opens 2015 With 4-2 Loss At Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshmen Melanie DaSilva (Bristol, R.I.) and Alex Mesropyan (Mahwah, N.J.) scored their first career goals Friday night, as the Sacred Heart women's soccer team opened its 2015 season with a 4-2 loss at Army West Point.

Sacred Heart (0-1-0) bounced back from an Army (1-0-0) tally in the eighth minute to equalize in the 12th minute. DaSilva one-touched a loose ball at the top of the Black Knights' 18-yard box off the crossbar and in to make the score 1-1. Army took a 2-1 lead in the 23rd minute on a Kayleigh Stallings goal, then went up 3-1 on a Katie Holder goal in the 78th minute. The Pioneers closed to within one in the 85th minute when Mesropyan stepped up to the penalty spot and converted to make the score 3-2. The Black Knights tacked on another goal one minute later to make the final score 4-2.

The Pioneers are back in action Sunday afternoon at Stony Brook. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.

FIRST HALF 

- Army had first shot of the game in the 6th minute when Sam Gottlieb put it over the SHU goal

- The Black Knights took the lead in the  8th minute when Bailey Widman scored off of a Katie Holder cross 

- SHU tied the game 1-1 in the 12th minute on the first career goal by Melanie DaSilva. The freshman's shot from inside the 18-yard box rang off the inside of the crossbar and in

- Army took a 2-1 lead in the 23rd minute; Kayleigh Stallings knocked in a Clare Shea shot inside the six-yard box

- Dana Cosmedy had a long shot saved by Army goalkeeper Jordan Cassalia in the 31st minute

SECOND HALF

- SHU earned its first corner kick of the match four minutes into the second half

- DaSilva nearly tied the match in the 54th minute, getting behind the Black Knights' defense but her chip shot over the goalkeeper went wide

- Pioneers goalkeeper Talia Schwartz stopped a shot by Clare Shea in the 70th minute to keep the deficit at one; made another save in the 74th minute

- Army went ahead 3-1 in the 78th minute when Katie Holder hit a one-touch volley from Hanna Rozzi just under the crossbar

- An Army handball in the box in the 85th minute led to a SHU penalty kick; Freshman Alex Mesropyan converted for her first career goal, making the score 3-2 

- The Black Knights scored one minute later to get the lead back to two, 4-2.
