JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Shaquille Saunchez scored his first goal of the season Wednesday, but it was not enough to get past the Saint Peter's Peacocks in a 2-1 loss at Jaroschak Field.
After Sacred Heart (1-4-1) controlled a majority of the possession early, it was Saint Peter's (2-3-1) that scored first. Luke Fairlamb converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute to give the Peacocks a 1-0 lead. Twenty-one seconds into the second half, Ezequiel Cei scored on a penalty kick of his own to put Saint Peter's ahead 2-0. The Pioneers drew back to within a goal in the 47th minute on a strike by Saunchez. Sacred Heart had three shots on goal in the final ten minutes, but could not score the equalizer.
The Pioneers now prepare for Northeast Conference play, which begins on Friday, October 9 with a 3:30 p.m. game at Robert Morris.
FIRST HALF
- Ezra Siyadhuba and Dylan Santos put shots wide of the goal in the first five minutes.
- Saunchez had a shot saved by Saint Peter's goalkeeper Jamie Cleland in the 13th minute.
- Cleland stopped a shot by Jamal Vinson in the 17th minute.
- Tucker Hackett made his first save of the game in the 27th minute.
- Mahmoud Kafel nearly tied the game in the 42nd minute, but Cleland made the save to keep Saint Peter's ahead 1-0.
SECOND HALF
- Saunchez's goal in the 47th minute was his first as a Pioneer.
- Aaron Schwartz put a shot on goal in the 65th minute. He had another shot saved in the 81st minute.
- Saunchez fired a shot wide of the goal in the 71st minute.
- Saint Peter's almost took a 3-1 lead in the 74th minute, but the Pioneers' defense cleared a Santiago Mateus shot off the goal line.
- Chris Carneiro had a shot cleared off the goal line in the 85th minute.
- Jamal Vinson was denied on a header in the 87th minute.
