NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Sacred Heart men's fencing team travelled to New Haven for their annual battle with Yale on Saturday.
Yale jumped out to a 6-3 lead after the first round with Sacred Heart only able to secure two wins in foil and a win in epee. Yale increased their lead to 11-7 after the second round due to another winless performance from the Pioneer saber squad. Despite going 5-4 in the last round, the Pioneers fell to a determined Eli side 15-12. Foil led the way on the day (6-3) with sophomore Tyler Endee having a perfect 3-0 day against a very talented Yale foil squad. Alexander Harwood in foil, and Dante Centeno and Cody Richard in epee also had two-win days.
"This was a frustrating loss for us", said head coach Dr. Tom Vrabel. "Yale always has a solid team and it is always tough to get a win in New Haven. We have historically prided ourselves in being ready at the beginning of each match for a strong start, but we have had to play catch up all year. Epee continued to keep their steak alive since the days of Justin Dion of besting the Elis in epee and foil put in an awesome performance. I hope for a better performance against Vassar next weekend at the NFC #3 competition."
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, February 6 at Smith College where they will be competing in the final Northeast Fencing Conference weekend of the season. Action will begin at 10 AM.
