GORHAM, Maine – Second period goals from Casey Stathopoulos and Megan Finlay were more than enough for Sacred Heart goaltender Nicole Magee, who made 28 saves for her first career shutout in the Pioneers' 2-0 victory over Southern Maine on Tuesday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena. The win is already the second of the New Year for SHU, who improves to 4-5-2.
After a scoreless first period that saw Southern Maine hold a slight 8-7 advantage in shots, it took just over five minutes of the second for Sacred Heart to break the scoreless tie. Heather Daley and Hanna Skelley set up Stathopoulos for what would eventually turn out to be the game-winner with 14:54 showing clock. It was the captain's team-leading eighth goal of the season and extends her point streak to five straight games.
With time winding down in the second, Megan Finlay second goal of the season doubled SHU's lead just 2:18 before the intermission. Taylor Moreland and Brittany Smith picked up assists on the score.
The goal provided important insurance for Sacred Heart, as USM controlled the final period with 12 shots against just three for Pioneers. The Huskies could not beat Magee though, as the senior improved to 4-2-0 on the year with a fourth win in her last five appearances.
The 12-3 edge in shots in the third helped Southern Maine to a 28-19 advantage in shots for the game. Britney Evangelista made 17 saves for the Huskies in a losing effort. Both teams went 0-3 for on the power play.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow at 4 pm.
