Box Score SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Amanda Fontaine was not to be outdone by her goaltending teammate, as she followed Nicole Magee's second consecutive shutout with one of her own in Sacred Heart's second straight 5-0 victory, this one over St Michael's on the final day of the DoubleTree Hockey Classic on Saturday evening. The win gave the SHU the tournament title, as the Pioneers end their four game road a perfect 4-0 to improve to 7-5-2.
Fontaine and Magee shared the tournament MVP honors, as the two have now each won twice during the four game winning streak, giving up just one goal in a combined 241 minutes. It is Fonatine's second career shutout, her other one coming in a 4-0 blanking of SUNY Canton in SHU's first ever game at the Sports Center of Connecticut on November 14, 2014. She made 20 saves.
The Sacred Heart offense gave Fontaine plenty of support, with Casey Stathopoulos and Taylor Moreland netting two goals each, as the Pioneers outshout St. Michael's 36-20. The two now lead the Pioneers with ten and seven goals, respectively. Stathopoulos also extends her point streak to eight games.
SHU came out with three goals in the opening period, including two in the first 5:12. Brittany Smith put the Pioneers ahead just 2:45 in before assisting on Moreland's score just 2:27 later. Moreland had previously assisted on Smith's goal with Julie Dobiac, while Megan Finlay joined Smith in assisting on Moreland's.
Stathopoulos would provide the next two goals for Sacred Heart, tripling the Pioneer lead with just 48 seconds remaining on the first period clock. She then made it 4-0 with 14:07 to go in the second. Carly Radovich provided the assist on the first, and Hanna Skelley and Megan Ofner set up the second. Amie Varano set up Moreland to put the final touches on the weekend with an empty netter just 23 seconds before the final buzzer.
With both teams getting four power play opportunities, the Sacred Heart penalty kill went its fourth straight game without allowing a man advantage score, and has now killed off the last 15 they have faced during the four-game winning streak.
Sacred Heart will look to continue its spectacular start to the New Year next weekend, as it returns to the Sports Center of Connecticut for a home and home with Stevenson on Friday at 7 pm and Saturday at 4 pm.
