FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's tennis team began competition with NJIT by winning the doubles point, only to fall in all six singles matches on Thursday afternoon at the Pioneer Tennis Courts. The loss snapped a two-match winning streak for the Pioneers.
Brian Power and Matt Dean continued their winning ways, moving above .500 to 12-11 with a third consecutive victory, 6-2 at first doubles. Matthew Surprenant and Anthony Santino then secured the afternoon's opening point with a 7-5 triumph at the third position, their second straight win together.
Power was then one of two Pioneers to have his singles match go into three sets. He took the first set of the first flight comfortably 6-2, only to get edged 4-6 in the second and 2-6 in the third. Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen was in the opposite situation, dropping the opening set 3-6 at third singles before coming back with a 7-5 victory in the second. He could not carry the momentum into the third, where he would eventually fall 6-1.
Sitting at 2-1 in the Northeast Conference, SHU has a crucial league matchup this Saturday at Bryant that begins at 10 am.
