Box Score TEANECK, N.J. – The Sacred Heart baseball pulled off its second late four-run comeback in the span of five days, rallying from a 7-3 ninth inning deficit with five runs in top of the ninth capped by Jesus Medina's go ahead RBI double with two outs on Friday at Fairleigh Dickinson.
Cody Doyle, Alex Perry and Ted Shaw began the comeback with back-to-back-to-back singles, the last of the three making it a three-run game. A fly out momentarily halted the momentum but Zack Short worked a walk to load the bases. Still, FDU was one out away after Victor Sorrento's sacrifice fly, leaving runners on first and third with two outs. Up stepped Dan Schock with a clutch game-tying double to left center on a 1-2 pitch, setting the stage for Medina.
James Cooksey worked around a lead off single for his second consecutive save in just his third relief outing of the season, giving SHU its second five-game winning streak of the season. Now with a 10-2 record in Northeast Conference play, the second place Pioneers add a game to their lead over the third place Knights, who are now 8-8 in the league.
For much of the afternoon it looked as if SHU would not be able to recover from Fairleigh Dickinson's five-run first. The Pioneers answered with a run in both of its next at bats, as Schock belted his team-leading fourth home run in the second and Shaw produced an RBI single in the third, but FDU quickly reestablished a five-run lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. There would not be another run until Medina's RBI base knock in the eighth, which at the time did not seem to have as much of an impact as it eventually would.
It was Brent Teller that kept SHU in the game, replacing starter Jason Foley to begin the second and nearly pitching the remainder of the game. After throwing 6.1 innings of two-run ball, he was finally lifted for Baylor Sundahl with one out in the eighth. Two of the there hits he gave up came in the two-run third inning when Patrick McCLure led off with a single and Joel Roman followed with a home run two batters later, his second of the afternoon. Aside from that, the lone other hit was a one-out double in the fourth. He went the next four innings hitless, allowing just three walks, two of which came in the eighth. Sundahl came on to strand those two runners by striking out the final two hitters to earn his first career collegiate victory.
Sacred Heart outhit FDU 15-9, with six Pioneers recording multi-hit game led by Alex Perry's 3-4 day. The sophomore was also one of two to score two runs, joining Schock, who led the Pioneers with three RBI's and also walked. Joining those two with multiple base knocks was Jake Friar, Sorrento, Shaw and Medina, the latter two of which also added two RBI's.
Joel Roman almost single handedly lifted Fairleigh Dickinson to the victory, finishing 2-3 with the two home runs that led to five of the Knights' seven runs. It was his two-out blast in the first that established the five-run advantage before he added the second in the third to make the score 7-2. Also with two hits were Dylan Sprague and Matt McCann. Sprague opened the scoring with a lead off homer in the first.
The comeback spoiled a solid start from FDU starter Tim Quinn, who despite allowing nine hits, only surrendered three runs. He was lifted with two outs in the eighth after Sorrento's two single, which ultimately led to SHU's third run. Ryan MacDonald faced the next two batters and could not record an out, walking Schock before giving up the RBI single to Medina. Ryan Brennan came on for the final out in the eighth and would remain in the game for the ninth, where he would ultimately receive the loss.
Sacred Heart will look to carry the momentum from this afternoon's comeback into tomorrow's doubleheader, which is set to begin at 1 pm.
