FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart looks to move to 4-0 for the first time since 2013 Saturday night when it travels to Long Island to face the #20/24 Stony Brook Seawolves.
The Pioneers and Seawolves will play each other for the first time since Oct. 21, 2006 when Stony Brook scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win 38-21 at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook leads the series 10-4, but SHU won four of the last seven meetings.
Last week, SHU won its Homecoming game against Marist 31-6 to move to 3-0 on the season. The Pioneers scored 14 points off two Red Foxes turnovers late in the second quarter to overcome two Marist field goals and take a 14-6 lead at halftime. SHU rushed for 339 yards in the game, led by senior running back Nate Chavious' 125 yards and two touchdowns. Ose Imeokparia had 86 yards rushing with RJ Noel rushing for 82 yards and throwing for 104 yards and a touchdown.
The Sacred Heart defense held Marist to 21 rushing yards and 231 yards of total offense. CJ Parvelus led SHU in tackles for the second straight game with eight, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Through three games this season, the Pioneers' defense is ranked among the top-10 in the country in five different statistical categories. SHU leads the nation in tackles for loss at 11 per game and is second in rushing defense, allowing just 34 yards per game. The Pioneers have shut out its opponent in the second half of each game this season.
Stony Brook is 2-1 on the season after upsetting then-#2 Richmond 42-14 last Saturday. Running Back Stacy Bedell rushed for 100 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Seawolves past the Spiders. Stony Brook's defense intercepted Richmond quarterback Kyle Lauletta three times. Both of the Seawolves wins this season have come against ranked opponents, opening 2016 with a 13-9 win over then-#19 North Dakota.
