Flaherty School Records Highlight Opening Day at ECAC Winter Championship

The Sacred Heart University swimming and diving team compiled 138 points in the first-day of competition at the 2017 ECAC Winter Championship. The three-day event, which runs through Sunday, is being held Nassau County Aquatics Center, the site of the 2018 NEC Championship, in East Meadow, N.Y.
Highlighting the Pioneers opening day effort was the double-school record effort of Margaret Flaherty in the 1,650-freestyle. The rookie touched in fifth-place with a swim of 17:24.80 lowering a 13-year old school record. She also lowered her own mark in the 1,000-yard freestyle, with a split of 10:31.84.
NEC member Wagner is atop the women's standings after the first day with 263 points. Fairfield is second (174), followed by LIU Post (154), Columbia (150) and the Pioneers. Siena is in sixth place behind the Pioneers with 122 points. Other NEC foes are also at the championship, with St. Francis College (109) in ninth, LIU Brooklyn (102) tied for 10th, and St. Francis University (90) in 12th place.
1,650-Freestyle
- All four Pioneers recorded season-best swims in the mile, led by Flaherty's fifth-place finish
- Flaherty lowered the 13-year old mark set by Christine DePierro (17:52.84) in 2004, while eclipsing her own 1,000-freestyle record (10:38.13) from earlier this season
- Lauren Spencer touched 21st with a swim of 18:14.36, followed by Nicole Suave in 23rd place (18:16.27) and Lindsey Dell'Isola touched at 18:47.97, good for 37th
Relays
- The Pioneers 800-yard freestyle relay team of Nikole Rudis, Kim Hylan, Fiona Maxwell and Lauren Somers finished sixth, with a time of 7:55.01
- Anna Brown, Jessica Poole, Emily Peter and Somers placed eighth in the 200-medley relay, finishing at 1:48.14, just .35 seconds shy of the school record
- The Pioneer relay of Emily Shenk, Julia Pusateri, Maxwell and Kaylyn Cuozzo swam to a finish of 1:51.75 in the 200-medley relay
Diving
- Nicole Pergolotti placed 12th in the 1-meter diving, compiling 149.15 points
