Swimming & Diving Finishes Fifth At ECAC Winter Championships

The Sacred Heart University swimming and diving team finished in fifth place, scoring 622.50 points at the 2017 ECAC Winter Championship, held at Nassau County Aquatics Center. The East Meadow, N.Y. facility will host the 2018 Northeast Conference championships in February.
The Pioneers added four career-best efforts on the final day of the competition.
NEC member Wagner won the overall title, scoring 1,277.50 points. Fairfield placed second with 830 points, followed by LIU Post with 696 and LIU Brooklyn at 640.50. SHU surpassed American by 11 points for fifth place, while NEC members St. Francis College (473) and St. Francis University (468) paced ninth and 10th respectively.
The Winter Championship marked the final competition of the first semester for SHU. The Pioneers return to dual action on January 13th when they travel to Manhattan.
200 Backstroke
- Anna Brown finished in sixth-place, touching at 2:08.61, more than a second faster than last season at the ECAC Winter Championship
- Kim Hylan was right behind with a seventh-place finish, touching at 2:09.38, her top time for the year
- Lauren Spencer (2:12.52), Emily Shenk (2:17.74) Meredith Bertoni (2:20.05), and Lindsay Dell'Isola (2:20.37) all clocked season-bests
100 Freestyle
- Lauren Somers placed ninth in the event, finishing at 52.90
- Alana Donabie added another personal-best to her weekend, touching at 5.29
- Nicole Sauve dropped her career-best by nearly a second, touching at 56.65
- Shanna Haddow (57.04), Kaylyn Cuozzo (57.17), and Victoria Catizone (57.83) all recorded season-best swims on Sunday
200 Breaststroke
- Jessica Poole placed 16th with a season-best swim of 2:28.79
- Julia Pusateri recorded a personal-best at 2:29.94, almost two seconds under her previous best swim, to place 22nd
- Renee Russo finished at 2:40.99, nearly two full seconds under her previous career-best swim
- Sarah Hensal (2:36.50) and Dee Henry (2:48.28) both put up season-best swims
200 Butterfly
- Fiona Maxwell was the Pioneers top finisher, placing 16th with a swim of 2:11.41
- Emily Peter (2:13.20) placed 20th and Nikole Rudis (2:14.48) placed 22nd, both with their best times of the season
- Meredith Bertoni (2:19.60) and Jaclyn Pianese (2:21.04) also recorded season-best times
400 Freestyle Relay
- The Pioneers A relay placed ninth with a swim of 3:39.73, led off by a season-best swim from Hylan, who split 54.59
- The B Relay finished at 3:47.13, with Brown notching her best 100 free of the season, splitting 56.66 to lead off
