OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.— The Sacred Heart baseball team finished off the series with two victories over NYIT on Saturday afternoon at Angelo Lorenzo Field. The Pioneers closed out the ninth inning of Friday's suspended game for the 6-0 victory. A four run ninth inning gave SHU (3-4) the 6-2 win over the Bears (1-6) in the series finale.
Senior left hander Franklin Miller pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off the remainder of Friday's suspended game.
The Bears got on the scoreboard first in game three on the home run by Zach Kleinwaks in the bottom of the second inning. Sacred Heart got going in the top half of the fourth inning as freshman Kevin Czapelski doubled to left field to start the inning. The next batter, senior Keith Klebart smashed a home run to left centerfield to give SHU the 2-1 lead. The two-run shot was the second homerun of Klebart's career.
NYIT added its second round-tripper of the afternoon off the bat of Brendan Dowd to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sacred Heart was held in check by Bears starter Elias Martinez for the next three innings. But Czapelski started things off in the ninth with a leadoff walk. After a pair of strikeouts and a pitching change, junior Anthony Capozziello singled to put runners on first and second. Redshirt junior P.J. DeFilippo roped a triple to left center field to bring in both runners and give SHU the 4-3 lead. The Pioneers were not done as junior rightfielder Dan Schock smashed a two-run home run to right centerfield. Schock led the team with nine homers last season. Klebart, DeFilippo and Schock all went 1-for-4 with two RBI in the game. Czapelski led the Pioneers with two runs scored.
Junior James Taubl pitched six innings in the no decision, surrendering two runs on three hits. The lefty fanned a career-high 11 batters on the afternoon. Senior southpaw John Sostarich picked up the win going three innings in relief, he allowed just two hits, with two strikeouts. Martinez went eight and a third with eight strikeouts in the loss for NYIT.
The Pioneers will start their West Coast road trip with a series at Seattle University starting Friday March 3.
