Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn.—The Sacred Heart baseball team looked to pick up its first series sweep of the season but were denied as CCSU took final game of the weekend series, 2-1 at CCSU Baseball Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Pioneers (7-15, 2-1 NEC) opened the fourth inning, as senior Keith Klebart singled through the left side with one out. The next batter, junior Anthony Capozziello singled to left field to put runners on first and second. After a strikeout, senior captain Jake Friar singled to right field to bring in Klebart for the lone Pioneer run of the game.
CCSU (10-10, 4-2 NEC) combated that in the top of the fifth inning as Chris Kanios started the rally with a bunt single down the third base line. Dean Lockery and Ryan Costello both singled and walked to load the bases with one out. Dylan Maher picked up the RBI on the ground out to pitcher Baylor Sundahl.
The Blue Devils opened the top of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles by Franklin Jennings and Kanios to put runners on first and third with no outs. Sophomore Jackson Aldam came on in relief for Sundahl, his first pitch offering to Dean Lockery was lifted to left field for the sacrifice fly to bring in the go-ahead run.
Sacred Heart looked to answer in the bottom of the seventh inning as freshman Kevin Czapelski singled through the right side to open the frame. After Shaw reached on a fielder's choice, the Pioneers worked back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. Blue Devils reliever Cody Brown struck out freshman Elijah Brown on the 3-2 pitch to get the second out. Brown worked out of the jam with a fly out to shallow right field by Capozziello to strand three runners on base. Nick Plancho worked a hitless two innings for CCSU to close out the game.
The Pioneers stranded 11 base runners on the afternoon. Capozziello went 2-for-4 while Friar picked up the lone run batted in. Sundahl pitched six innings, scattering nine hits. Aldam and
Mike Lembo pitched a combined three innings of scoreless relief.
The Pioneers host Yale for a mid-week contest at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, March 28 at 3:00 p.m.
