
Men's Soccer Alumni Earn NPSL Championship with Elm City Express

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sacred Heart men's soccer alumni Shaquille Saunchez '16, Chris Carniero '16, Matt Jones '13 and Anthony Anzevui '09, '14 of the Elm City Express captured the 2017 National Premier Soccer League Championship with a 5-0 win over Midland-Odessa at Reese Stadium on Saturday night.
After finishing the regular season 9-1-2, the Express earned the top seed out of the Northeast region. Elm City earned a 4-0 victory over Legacy 76 and a 3-1 win over Clarkstown SC Eagles to clinch the Northeast region and advance to the National semifinal. The Express earned a 2-0 win over CD Aguiluchos USA to advance to the final.
Jones, a three-time All-NEC selection during his tenure with the Pioneers yielded just six goals all season. He recorded three shutouts in Elm City's playoff run. Saunchez earned All-NEC first team selection after leading the Pioneers with 17 points. With Elm City, he played his way to an All-NPSL fourth team honor during the regular season and added three goals in the playoffs. Carniero, a two-year captain at SHU played on the Express back line and appeared in four playoff games as a reserve.
Elm City finished its inaugural season in the NPSL 14-1-2.
